Sports Betting Guide: How to Read Odds, Margins and Parlays

Updated 7 min read

PBA, NBA, football, esports — before you put money on a line, learn what the numbers mean and how much the bookmaker keeps.

Short answer

Sports betting odds include a bookmaker margin. With decimal odds of 1.91 on both sides of a 50/50 game, the implied probabilities add up to about 104.7%, so the book keeps roughly 4.5% of the money staked. To read odds, divide 1 by the decimal price to get the implied chance. Parlays multiply both the payout and the margin.

Decimal odds in plain words

Decimal odds show your total return per ₱1 staked, stake included. A ₱100 bet at 2.50 returns ₱250 (₱150 profit). The implied probability is 1 ÷ odds, so 2.50 means 40%.

The bookmaker's margin

Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome. Anything above 100% is the book's margin. At 1.91 / 1.91, the total is 52.4% + 52.4% = 104.7%, which works out to about 4.5% kept from the money staked. Lower margins mean better value, so compare prices before you bet.

Common markets: moneyline, handicap, over/under

  • Moneyline (1X2): pick the winner, or the draw in football.
  • Handicap / spread: one team starts with a points head start, like +5.5, to even out a mismatch.
  • Over/under (totals): bet on whether combined points land above or below a line.

Why parlays look great and cost more

A parlay multiplies the odds of several picks, and it multiplies the margin too. Four picks at 1.91 pay about 13.3×, but a fair price would be 16×. And one wrong leg loses the whole ticket. Treat parlays as a small fun bet, not a strategy.

Habits that protect your budget

  • Never chase a loss with a bigger bet on the next game.
  • Ignore "fixed match" or "sure tip" sellers. Match-fixing tips are a scam, and betting on fixed games is a crime.
  • Live in-play betting is fast. Set a per-match limit before kickoff.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate implied probability from decimal odds?
Divide 1 by the decimal odds. Odds of 2.00 mean 50%, 1.50 means about 66.7%, and 4.00 means 25%.
What is a good bookmaker margin?
Lower is better. Popular match-winner markets often carry margins around 4–6%. Compare the total of the implied probabilities across bookmakers before you bet.
Are parlays worth it?
They pay more because they're harder to win, and the bookmaker's margin compounds with each leg. Keep them small.
